Being overweight is quite different from the term ‘ obesity’. Anyone with a body mass index over 25kg/m2 is considered to be overweight, over 30kg/m2 and you’re obese. Being overweight is caused by an excess of fat in the body. Fat is a necessary substance for our body. Our bodies require fat to support the function of hormonal, reproductive and immune system. Fat is also useful for thermal insulation, shock absorption and also to produce energy. However, too much fat is unhealthy.
Being overweight is not good for our bodies and can cause many disorders such as fatigue, shortness of breath, palpitations, oedema, sleep apnoea, and respiratory obstruction. Other disorders that are caused by excess weight are hypertension, coronary heart disease, gout, and osteoarthritis.
Excess weight is caused by an energy imbalance, whereby the amount of food intake exceeds the amount of energy that used. So, an inactive lifestyle will cause someone to become overweight.

Acupuncture Treatment For Overweight
Acupunture is an effective way to achieve weight loss. However, the therapist must ensure that the patient does not have any serious health conditions, otherwise the treatment may be dangerous. The treatment targets acupoints of ST 36, ST 40, ST 34, and SP 4, which are the points on the stomach and spleen meridian. Beside the traditional acupuncture treatment, auricular acupuncture can also be benefitial. When peforming the auricular acupuncture, the therapist will choose the points of hunger and mouth, which are effective for decreasing the appetite.4
