Muscular Dystrophy (MD) is a progressive genetic disorder. The disease process weakens the muscles, which worsens the condition over time and thus increasing the disability of those affected. The condition is life threatening.1
Muscular dystrophy starts in early childhood or in the teenage years. Children who have this condition will start to have symptoms such as frequent falls, weak muscles, muscle cramps or increasing inability to get up, climb, run or jump easily. Other symptoms include curvature of the spine, droopy eyelids, heart problems, trouble breathing or swallowing, and vision disturbances.
Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic disorder caused by a mutation in x chromosome. Different types of muscular dystrophy have a different set of mutations. This genetic mutation make the body unable to produce dystrophin. Dystrophin is a protein essential for building and repairing muscles. Without this protein, muscles are unable to work correctly.
Muscular Dystrophy is a lifelong condition for which there is no known cure. The condition can only be managed and acupuncture may be helpful in dealing with some of the symptoms.
