Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. Bone cancer is caused when these cancer cells form in the bones and creates malignant growths.1 Signs and symptoms include a lump, abnormal bleeding, prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss, and a change in bowel movements. The majority of cancers are due to genetic mutations from environmental factors including economic and behavioral influences like tobacco (25–30%), diet and obesity (30–35%), infections (15–20%), radiation (both ionizing and non-ionizing, up to 10%), stress, lack of physical activity.2

RESEARCH

New research finds acupuncture effective in reducing malignant bone cancer tumor growth when applied in early stages. Acupuncture effects tumor growth of dangerous bone cancer and helps patients. The ability of acupuncture to reduce bone tumor growth is related to its ability to reduce tumor associated inflammation. In addition, acupuncture reduces the risk of spreading of bone cancer to other organs such as the lungs.3

Acupuncture can be applied to treat bone tumors and the acupoint ST-36 is to be stimulated.4 Acupuncture not only help reducing bone cancer inflammation, but can also down-regulate bone cancer symptoms such as pain, reduce nausea, vomiting and fatigue.5 When combined with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbs, acupuncture has a stronger effect. For instace, a human in situ study of ductal carcinoma showed that acupuncture caused it to successfully regress when combined with chinese medicinal herbs without the need for surgery or chemotherapy.

Another investigation was cited showing that acupuncture at ST-36 inhibits cancer cell division. The researchers concluded from this study that acupuncture “was found to reduce both bone tumor growth and lung metastasis” and this is related to acupuncture’s ability to affect tumor associated vasculature, lymphatics and nerve innervation.6
