Bronchitis is a disease that effect our respiratory function. It happens because our bronchial passage (large and medium-sized airways) in the lungs become inflamed by many irritants. Due to inflammation, the passage become swollen and thicker. There are two type of bronchitis, which are acute and chronic bronchitis. Acute bronchitis usually has a cough that lasts around three weeks. Whereas, chronic bronchitis is defined as a productive cough that lasts for three months or more per year for at least two years.1

SYMPTOMS

Acute bronchitis, or short-term bronchitis has a major symptom, which is a hard cough. When you cough due to bronchitis, you may secrete phlegm or mucus. The colour of mucus can vary from clear (no colour) to greenish mucus. Bronchitis can also bring similar symptoms to those of common cold or sinusitis, which are sore throat, headache, aches and pain. Since symptoms may mimic other diseases, a proper medical examination must be performed. Other symptom that may persist as a sign of bronchitis is a wheezing breath. This symptom is caused by inflamed airways, but it is more likely to happen if you have chronic bronchitis.2

CAUSES

Acute bronchitis is in more than 90% of cases the result of a viral infection. These viruses may be spread through the air when people cough or by direct contact. Risk factors include exposure to tobacco smoke, dust, and other air pollution. A small number of cases are due to high levels of air pollution or bacteria such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae or Bordetella pertussis. Tobacco smoking is the most common cause of chronic bronchitis, with a number of other factors such as air pollution and genetics playing a smaller role.3

TREATMENTS

The acupuncture given to overcome bronchitis tries to cure the symptoms by removing the damp (wetness), eliminate the heat and melt the phlegm. Prior studies suggest the clinical efficacy of Feishu (BL-13) and Sihua (Four Flower) acupuncture for patients with chronic bronchitis. Sihua (four flower) acupuncture refers to the application of acupoints Geshu (BL-17) and Danshu (BL-19) during an acupuncture session. The needles are to be retained in position for 20 minutes. One 20 minute acupuncture session daily is recommended, for a total of one month. This treatment enhances immunoglobulin levels while simultaneously providing significant clinical improvements.4

Another study shows the efficacy of acupuncture as a bronchodilator focusing on the following points: Yuji (LU-10), Chize (LU-5), Kongzui (LU-6), Lieque (LU-7), Tianshu (ST-25), Zusanli (ST-36), Fenglong (ST-40), Xiabai (LU-4), Zhongfu (LU-1). The needle retention time is 30 minutes. One 30 minute acupuncture treatment is to be conducted daily. The entire course of acupuncture treatments consist of 10 sessions.5
