Hiccups is a term to explain the involuntary contraction of the diaphragm that repeats several times per minute. This condition is also known as synchronous diaphragmatic flutter (SDF), or singultus. Hiccups can occur individually or in bouts. The rhythm of hiccups usually tends to be constant. Hiccup normally resolves itself.

SYMPTOMS


The symptom of hiccups is the “hic” sound that come from the mouth. Prior to the sound, usually there is a slight tightening sensation in the chest, abdomen, or throat. Hiccups could be serious and cause problem with eating, sleeping, or breathing.

CAUSES


There are many things that can cause hiccups such as eating too quickly or too much, disease that affecting the nerve that control the diaphragm, abdominal surgery, strokes, brain tumors, noxious fumes, and certain medication.

Acupuncture Treatment For Hiccup

The disorder of hiccup can be treated using acupuncture treatment.The treatment will be focusing at some acupoints, i.e. BL 17 (Geshu), GV 14 (Dazhui), CV 12 (Zhongwan), PC 6 (Neiguan), ST 36 (Zusanli), BL 20 (Pishu), BL 21 (Weishu), and LR 14 (Qimen). Each treatment will require duration of 30 minutes. Before treatment, needle that will be used for the treatment need to be sterilized. The treatment will need patient lying down in the lateral recumbent position. The stimulation given is only done by hand. No electric stimulation is used in this treatment. The stimulation continue until patient feel a de qi (needling sensation). De Qi sensation is sensation marked by soreness, numbness, heaviness, distention feeling, and pressure like sensation.
