Hives, which is also known as urticaria are red and itchy raised areas of skin that looked vary in shapes and sizes. Hive usually last no longer than 12 hours. It is a common skin condition and can change size rapidly and also move around from one place to another place. There are two types of hives, i.e. ordinary and occasionally hives. Ordinary hives flare up suddenly while occasionally hives are by direct physical stimulation by environmental forces like heat, cold, and sunlight. The most common treatment for hives are antihistamines.

SYMPTOMS


The symptom of hives is the existence of red and itchy raised skin areas. This symptoms can last anywhere at human body and symptom can last from minutes to months or even years. The bump of hives can appear and go away quickly. Although seems annoying, hives are not life-threatening condition. But hives that emerge in the throat require immediate emergency response.

CAUSES


Hives are caused by our body reaction to an allergen. When our body response to an allergen substance, our body release histamine and other chemicals into the blood. The releasing of histamine make our body feel itched and swelling. There are many allergens that can trigger hives such as animal dander, insect bites, medicines, pollens, Shellfish, fish, nuts, eggs, milk, and other foods. Hives also can develop as a result of emotional stress, extreme cold, excessive perspiration, and infections.

Acupuncture Treatment For Hives

In treating hives, there are some acupoints that commonly used to treat this condition, which are :
1. Spleen 10 (SP10) :
This point is located at above of the top inner corner of the kneecap when the knee is slightly bent. This acupoint is regarded as one of the major points on the body for treating the skin condition including eczema and hives.
2. Large Intestine 11 (LI 11) :
It is the point that is located in the depression at the outer part of the elbow crease, i.e. between the elbow tendon and the bone. The point is easily find if the arm is bent at 90 degree with the palm position is facing the abdomen. Benefit of treating this acupoint is to clear and expel wind and heat from the body and also reduce any inflammation.
The treatment for this condition will need duration of at least 3 weeks. As the treatment progress, the condition of the patient will get better and better.
