RESEARCH

Research into the use of acupuncture to treat erectile dysfunction is limited, and the studies so far have been small. However, results are promising in the effectiveness of acupuncture for psychological ED. For instance, in a case study of a patient that was unresponsive to medication called sildenafil (Viagra, Revatio), a combination of manual and electroacupuncture were very successful in improving the quality of sexual intercourse. In addition, in this study acupuncture did significantly improve the ability to maintain an erection during sexual intercourse. At the same time, erection hardness and sustainability did improve with subjective reporting improvements in sexual satisfaction as well.2 The recommended acupuncture treatment is applied in three separate protocols each week: Manual acupuncture applied to acupuncture point BL-33; Manual acupuncture applied to the pudendal nerve point (PN); and electroacupuncture applied to PN. Each protocol should be applied once a week for five weeks. Manual stimulation of BL-33 should be applied with a sterile, disposable acupuncture needle. Depth of insertion is suggested from 50 mm to 60 mm maximum. BL-33 is located in the sacral region and in traditional chinese medicine (TCM) this point is used to strengthen the lower back and legs.3 The PN acupuncture point is located in the spine. For manual acupuncture, this should be applied for 15 minutes. However, for electroacupuncture 10 Hz stimulation is recommended for 15 minutes.4 Other research conducted on larger sample sizes reports the success of acupuncture for the treatment of pathophysiological responses to diabetes mellitus, since ED is associated with diabetes.5

It is also known that stimulating the acupressure points connected with strengthening your sexual muscles improves ED. The following acupoints KD-11, KD-27, GB-23, GB-27, B-47, CV-2, ST-30 should be pressed for near 30 seconds a day and then repeat for 10 days. This treatment is also very useful for premature ejaculation.6 Another quite useful acupressure treatment involves stimulating the following acupoints ST-36, KD-3, SP-6, HT-7, LV-3. You are suggested to find the pressure point and apply pressure for 30 seconds to one minute. Since acupuncture and acupressure work by stimulating both the nervous system and the vascular system, then these approaches will cause blood vessels to dilate, allowing an erection to occur.7

Another acupuncture treatment does include stimulating the following acupoints CV-4, BL-23, BL-47, KD-1, KD-3 and ST-36. CV-4 is the commonly used acupressure point for impotence. You can locate it below the belly button. It should be stimulated by applying significant pressure between the belly button and the pubic bone for 1 to 2 minutes. You are supposed to breathe deeply as you do it.8 BL-23 and BL-47 are found on the lower back. You stimulate them by using your hands to apply pressure. You should rub them for a minute to generate heat. Then, use the thumb and fingertips to press for another minute. KD-1 is found under the foot in the center area. You can stimulate it by pressing with your thumb for about a minute as you take deep breaths.9 KD-3 is located in the ankle. You can stimulate it by pressing for about a minute as you take deep breaths. ST-36 is located near the knee. You stimulate it by using the middle and index fingertips to apply deep pressure for about a minute. For this to work for impotence, you need to do it for a couple of months.10
