Acupuncture Treatment For Otitis Media (Middle Ear Infection)
Otitis Media is not a single disease, rather, it is a group of inflammatory diseases of the middle ear. There are two types of Otitis Media, Acute Otitis Media (AOM) and Otitis Media with Effusion (OME). AOM is an infection in the middle ear, while OME involves fluid in the middle ear. AOM can become complicated and result in discharge from the ear. This condition is called Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM).

The symptoms of Otitis Media are as follow :
– Symptom of AOM : ear pain, hearing loss, loss of appetite, fever
– Symptom of OME : Feeling of fullness, presence of fluids.
– Symptom of CSOM : discharge from the ear

CAUSES
The causes of Otitis Media are :
– AOM : Related with childhood anatomy and immune function, virus, bacterial
– OME : Upper respiratory infection by virus, exposure to smoke, allergies

Acupuncture Treatment For Otitis Media (Middle Ear Infection)
Acupuncture is regarded as an alternative treatment for otitis media. Acupuncture theory believes that otitis media is caused by excess of damp heat and Yin deficiency. The treatment for otitis media using acupuncture can be performed in many various methods or patterns. One of the treatment patterns is as follows :
1. Damp-heat in the LV/GB :
GB 40 – damp heat in GB
ST 36 – with damp signs, tonify SP and Qi
2. LV & KD Yin Deficiency :
KD 3 – tonify KD Yin
Besides the acupoints above, there are more acupoints that are considered as local points, which are GB2, TH17, and TH21.
