Parkinson’s Disease is a chronic, progressive condition involving the malfunction and death of vital nerve cells called neurons in the brain1. Its cause is currently unknown2.

TCM ascribes Parkinson’s disease to a Yin deficiency of the Kidney & Liver3.

TREATMENTS

From a TCM perspective, Parkinson’s is caused by Qi deficiency, blood deficiency, kidney and liver yin deficiency, stagnation of qi and blood.  Acupoints that are usually used to treat Parkinson’s disease are sishencong (EX-HN-1), quchi (LI-11), waiguan (TB-5), yanglingquan (GB-34), zusanli (ST-36), and fenglong (ST-40).  The stimulation of the acupoints is done by using  an electro= stimulator combined with manual stimulation to some other points.  Needles will stay in place for around 40 minutes.  Additional acupoints can be used depending on the patient condition and symptoms.  The treatment course takes around three months, with daily treatment given to the patient4.
