The exact cause of schizophrenia is unknown. However, most experts believe that it is a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

It’s thought that some people are more vulnerable to developing schizophrenia and certain situations can trigger the condition

Acupuncture Treatment For Schizophrenia

Given the two main differential diagnosis for Schizophrenia, there are two treatment principles:

1. Depressive psychosis (Phlegm and Qi stagnation) “Quiet”
Gradual onset, emotional dejection and mental dullness at the initial stage, followed by incoherent speech, muttering to one’s self, mood swings (frequent laughter or crying for no apparent reason) no desire to eat, somnolence (sleepiness). The treatment principle consists of regulating Qi, alleviating mental depression, resolving phlegm, and calming Shen.

The acupoints to stimulate are the following: HT-7 (even) Yuan source point; calms Shen, PC-7 (even) Yuan source point; Also calms Shen. GV-20 is located at the top of the head. BL-15 (even) Heart shu point. The following four points regulate Liver Qi and alleviate mental depression: LI-4 (even) and LV-3 (even), BL-18 (even), Liver shu point, CV-17 (reduce) Sea of Qi.

Other acupoints to be stimulated are ST-40 (reduce) The Luo connecting point of Stomach, SP-6 (even), BL-20 (even) Spleen shu. It should be noted that the spleen and stomach are the sources of phlegm in the body, by invigorating Earth, the phlegm is resolved.⁴

2. Manic psychosis (Flaring up of phlegm fire) “Loud”
Sudden onset, irritability, easily angered, flushed face, blood-shot eyes, headache, insomnia followed by excessive motor activity and unusual strength, mania, restlessness, constantly abusive and violent behavior, climbing up to a high place and singing, running around with the body inappropriately exposed.

The acupoints to stimulate are the following: PC-8 (reduce) Ying spring point for purging Heart fire. HT-8 (reduce) Ying spring point for purging Heart fire. LV-2 (reduce) Ying spring point for purging Liver fire. GV-26 (reduce) GV channel enters the brain and GV-26 can regulate Yin and Yang, calm Shen and wake up the patient from the manic psychosis. GV-20, GV-16 (both reduced) “The brain is the sea of marrow, its upper part reaches the vertex of the cranium (GV-20) and its lower border reaches GV-16. PC-6 (reduce) clears the heart. CV-6, CV-12, ST-25, ST-40 Luo connecting point (all reduced).

These points all dissolve phlegm and regulate Qi. CV-12 is the front mu of Stomach and the influential point of the Fu organs. Spleen and Stomach are the organs in which phlegm is produced. For this reason, because of its control over the Stomach, CV-12 is used for phlegm. ST-25, the front mu of the LI is utilized for regulation of the Stomach. The Large Intestine should be purged to regulate the stomach. CV-6 Sea of Qi, in order to eliminate phlegm, Qi should be regulated.⁵
