Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive bacterium frequently found in the nose, respiratory tract and on the skin. The emergence of antibiotic resistant strains of S.aureus such as methicillin resistant S.aureus(MRSA) is a worldwide problem. It is a common cause of skin infections, respiratory infections and food poisoning1.

SYMPTOMS

 

Skin infections are the most common form of Staph infection, boils, folliculitis, impetigo and cellulitis. The skin becomes tender, swollen, and red.

S.aureus is a leading cause of bloodstream infections throughout the industrialised world. This disease is very severe in the very young and very old.  Without antibiotic treatment S.aureus has a case fatality of 80%. With antibiotic treatment case fatality rates range from 15% to 50% depending on the age and health of the patient, as well as the antibiotic resistance of the S.aureus strain2.

 

CAUSES

 

Staphylococcus aureus is often naturally occuring on the skin and in the upper respiratory tract in humans. Infections can occur if the skin or mucosal barriers are broken. It is also a common cause of infective endocarditis3.

 

TREATMENTS

 

Laser acupuncture is suggested as a treatment for MRSA4, targeting the following acupoints: TB5, SP4, CV9, and KD3. The duration of treatment for each point is 30 seconds only. For this treatment to succeed, it is highly recommended that the treatment not combined with any drugs like antibiotics.
