Systemic Lupus Erythematosis  (SLE)  is a chronic inflammatory disorder that is caused by an autoimmune deficiency. This disorder is more common in women than men. The treatment of SLE is directed toward decreasing the inflammatory and/or the level of autoimmune activity.

SYMPTOMS

 


Symptoms and signs of SLE are :
– Butterfly rash
– Red skin rash
– Increased sensitivity to sunlight
– Ulcers of the mucus membranes
– Arthritis
– Pleuritis
–  Kidney disease
– Irritation of the brain
– Abnormal  blood count
– Positive testing result of ANA antibody

CAUSES

 


The exact cause of SLE is unknown. However, the following factors can play a role in the development of SLE :

– Heredity
– Genes
– Virus infection
– UV light
– Certain drugs
– Other medical conditions

Acupuncture Treatment For Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a very complex and serious disorder. Treatment protocol for this disease consists of 2 treatments per week for 5 weeks. Acupoints targeted in this treatment  consist of 2 sets of acupoints. First set of acupoints are T-3, T-7, T-11, LI-4, GV-14, KI-7 and SP-6. The acupoints of T-3, T-7, T-11 are also called  Hua Tuo Jai Ji points. The second set of acupoints are T-5, T-9, L-1, GB-20, MH-5 and ST-36. Acupoints of T5 and T9 also considered as Hua Tuo Jai Ji points. The needles inserted at each acupoint are kept in place until sensation of de qi is felt by the patient.

OUTLOOK

 


The outlook for patients with SLE depends on the duration of the disease and the time of diagnosis. Patients with SLE generally do well with anti-malarial drugs, which addresses some of the inflammatory problems associated with the disease.5
