Acupuncture Treatment For Ulcerative Colitis

According to the Acupuncture Treatment Method, the treatment patterns of ulcerative colitis are by clearing heat, dispelling dampness, detoxifying and stopping bleeding. To overcome those problems, acupuncturist will perform treatment at some acupoints like Tianshu (ST25), Shangjuxu (ST37), Daheng (SP15), Zhongguan (RN12), Zusanli (ST36), Taibai (SP3), Shuifen (RN9), Qihai (RN 6). The purpose of the treatment to those acupoints are to regulate the spleen and stomach, strengthening the qi, nourishing intestine and regulate emotions. To make the treatment more effective, acupuncture treatment also combined with herbal medicine.

4Acupuncture & Herbs Relieve Ulcerative Colitis – HealthCMi, http://www.healthcmi.com/Acupuncture-Continuing-Education-News/1318-acupuncture-herbs-relieve-ulcerative-colitis-new-study[/This study concludes that adding acupuncture and herbs to the regular drug therapy for ulcerative colitis is overwhelmingly effective.  The study group that received acupuncture and herbs had a total effective rate of 93% whereas the group who received the drugs only had a 75.86% total effective rate. The other clinical benefit of the acupuncture and herbal medicine was that patients required less time of care when using the combined therapy and also that that group demonstrated less depression and anxiety. However, the study did not test acupuncture’s effect alone nor indeed did it test herbs alone without acupuncture. And so it must be concluded that it is still unknown if acupuncture  can be effective in adding to the effect of ulcerative colitis treatment or not. Also, a strong placebo effect may be taking place with patients who are part of a large clinical trial and are receiving ‘hands on’ care in the form of acupuncture and not simply being given tablets to swallow. Further study is needed using mesalazine ( the drug of choice for colitis) in combination with acupuncture.( note]
