Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. The signs and symptoms of syphilis depend in which of the four stages it presents (primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary). The primary stage presents with a single chancre (a firm, painless, non-itchy skin ulceration) but there are multiple sores. In secondary syphilis a diffuse rash occurs, which involves the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. There may also be sores in the mouth or vagina. In latent syphilis, which can last for years, there are few or no symptoms. In tertiary syphilis there are gummas (soft non-cancerous growths), neurological, or heart symptoms.1

RESEARCH

Acupuncture is known to improve the immune function and reduce stress in many conditions. Further, it prevents recurrence and helps heal latent syphilis, whereas acupressure treatments help with acupuncture to boost the immune system. The recommended acupuncture points for syphilis are GV-11, GV-16, LV-5 and PC-9. According to traditional chinese medicine (TCM), syphilis is caused by invasion of an external pathogen to the lung, spleen, liver, and kidney. This pathogen can transform itself into heat and make complications with the existence of damp phlegm for instance. Therefore, the recommended treatment is based on the following stages: Invasion of toxic heat to the lung and spleen, damp heat in the liver meridian, toxic heat in the blood, toxic heat in the tendons and bones, deficiency in the kidney and liver, deficiency in the heart and kidney.2
