Arthritis is a term often used to mean any disorder that affects joints. There are over 100 types of arthritis. The most common forms are osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis usually occurs with age and affects the fingers, knees, and hips. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that often affects the hands and feet. Other types include gout, lupus, fibromyalgia, and septic arthritis. They are all types of rheumatic disease. When it turns out to be a severe condition, then arthritis can lead to disability.1

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms generally include joint pain and stiffness. Other symptoms may include redness, warmth, swelling, and decreased range of motion of the affected joints. In some types other organs are also affected. Onset can be gradual or sudden. Other common symptoms of this condition would be early morning joint stiffness, tiredness, mild fevers or night sweats, or even skin rashes.2

CAUSES

Arthritis is not completely understood, since there are many types; therefore, there are multiple causes. They can vary from injury (leading to degenerative arthritis), abnormal metabolism (such as gout and pseudogout), inheritance (such as in osteoarthritis), infections (such as in the arthritis of Lyme disease), and also auto immune disease due to an overactive immune system (such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus).3

TREATMENTS

The following acupoints are shown to have significant clinical effects on knee osteoarthritis: ST-34, SP-10, SP-9, ST-36, ST-35, EX-LE4, EX-LE5. This treatment is to be received twice a week for a period of 5 weeks. Electric acupuncture stimulation is delivered for 30 minutes at 0.5 ms pulse width and 2 Hz frequency. The stimulation intensity is to be continuously adjusted based on the patient responses, in order to keep the pain level below the threshold.4

In addition, the following acupoints are shown to have significant effects on rheumatoid arthritis: LV-3, ST-25, ST-36, SI-3, SI-4, LI-4, LI-11, SP-6, SP-9, GB-25, GB-34, and HT-7. This laser acupuncture treatment is associated with significant improvement in ankle dorsi-flexion, ankle plantar-flexion, wrist flexion, wrist extension, and radial deviation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.5
