Smallpox is a highly infectious disease. Smallpox was originally known in English as the pox or red plague but is now believed to have been eradicated from the world (last naturally occuring case diagnosed in 1977). Smallpox is a disease that infect small blood vessel of the skin and in the mouth and throat. Smallpox is believed to have been acquired by humans originally as a zoonosis from a terrestrial African rodent between 16,000 and 68,000 years ago.1
For the first 17 days after infection people show no symptoms. However, after the incubation period, symptoms emerge :
– High fever
– Severe back pain
– Stomach pain
Smallpox is caused by the virus called variola virus. The virus can be spread directly or indirectly between persons.
