Osteoporosis is a disorder or condition that make our bone get weak and fragile so that the bone is likely to break. It is not a sudden condition, rather than it is a progress that can take up to several years to develop. Osteoporosis usually can be recognised when there is an accident or injury that make bone get fractured. People with osteoporosis usually not feel the pain until a fracture occur. 1

Most of the time, people who have osteoporosis do not know that they have such condition until bone fracture occured. However, there are some symptoms that might an indication of osteoporosis, which are pain and height loss. 2

Cause of risk factors of osteoporosis are :
–  Older age
– Ethnicity
– Hyperthyroidism
– Genetics
– Gastro-intestinal disorders
– Surgical Removal of the ovaries
– Smoking
– Alcohol abuse/ Anorexia
– Lack of activity

Acupuncture Treatment For Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a  common condition especially in the elderly. Acupuncture can play a great role in the treatment of this disease. According to the acupuncture medication theory, osteoporosis can happen because kidney qi is insufficient. Treatment is believed to be able to fortify the bone strength, by signalling the body to influence the bone formation and metabolism. There are many methods of acupuncture that can be used to treat osteoporosis, such as; manual acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, magnets, laser, acupoint catgut embedding, bleeding, acupoint injection, fire needle, needle knife, superficial needling, acupressure, cupping jar, or moxibustion. Regarding the points, there are some acupuncture techniques that can be chosen, which are traditional meridian points; Ashi points, auricular points, abdominal acupuncture points, and scalp acupuncture points.
