Acupuncture Treatment For Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea also spelled gonorrhoea is a known sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium neisseria gonorrhoeae. Many people have no symptoms though, men can have burning with urination, discharge from the penis or testicular pain. Whereas women can have burning with urination, vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding between periods or pelvic pain. Complications in women include pelvic inflammatory disease and in men include inflammation of the epididymis. If untreated, gonorrhea can spread to other locations such as joints or heart valves. Gonorrhea is widely spread through sexual contact with an infected person. This includes oral, anal and vaginal sex. It is also possible to transfer it from a mother to a child during birth.1
RESEARCH
It is well known that chinese medicine (TCM) treatment of gonorrhea involves arriving at the appropriate TCM diagnosis or pattern. This pattern within the individual is what treatment is based and not in the general condition. In this vein, the following patterns represent the contributing factors for the development of gonorrhea: liver and gallbladder damp heat, kidney yang deficiency and bladder damp heat. The liver and gallbladder damp heat pattern presents chest with hypochondriac pain/distention, jaundice, fever, bitter taste in the mouth, poor appetite, nausea, vomiting, swelling and itching of the genitals. The following 12 acupuncture points are recommended for liver and gallbladder damp heat: LI-11, SI-4, SP-9, SP-16, ST-2, ST-19, ST-20, ST-25, BL-1, BL-2, BL-19, T-10. The kidney yang deficiency pattern presents sore and weak back/knees, sensation of cold, aversion to cold, weak lower limbs and poor appetite. The following 5 acupuncture points are useful for liver and gallbladder damp heat: KD-3, KD-7, BL-23, BL-29, BL-30. Finally, the following 12 acupuncture points are recommended for bladder damp heat: HT-8, KD-10, SP-11, SP-12, SP-28, BL-22, BL-27, BL-28, BL-31, BL-35, BL-36, BL-39.2
Another treatment involves stimulating the point BL-67, pricked with a needle to cause bleeding of 15 drips approximately, then the needles are rapidly inserted into the point CV-4, CV-3 and CV-1, LV-5, SP-6, BL-30, GB-26, CV-6 and SP-6 manipulated for 3 minutes and retained for 15 minutes. Moxibustion is also suggested on points CV-4, ST-36 and SP-6 for 10 minutes at home.3 Other internal treatment for gonorrhea includes improving toxic damp heat invasion characterized by green thick discharge with swollen, painful, red local area and spasms by means of chinese herbal medicines such as long dan xie gan tang, ba zheng san, bei xie feng qi yin. The excessive heart fire is alleviated with dao chi san, huang lian, huang bai, lian xi xin. Whereas, spleen deficiency with damp accumulation causing chronic, white discharge, painful urinary tract, fatigue and poor appetite is treated with wu ling san, yi yi ren, etc.4
